Texas Chapter

Laya Rajaram

Hello,

My name is Laya Rajaram, and I’m 16 years old and from Dallas Texas. I have been living in Texas since I was born and went to Coppell ISD schools. I am currently a junior at Coppell High School. I feel fortunate for this tremendous life and quality education. Apart from my academics, I have involved myself in the Choir group, working with Special ED kids and DECA, a business club at my school. In my free time, I love baking, listening to music, playing with my dog, and hanging out with my friends and family.

When I came to know about Global Girls, I was quite excited and felt blessed to be part of this initiative. Global Girls support multiple schools to have access to period products and help the youth grow and learn along the way. From a youth’s point of view, it is a common physiological instance, and having the challenge to get the period products during this cycle is not only miserable but also can be a roadblock to coming to school and pursuing their education. By working with Global Girls, I am positive that we can end period poverty once and for all and create an impact on a menstruator’s life by providing access to these products as well as education.

My Mission with this initiative was to help all of the school districts here in Dallas Texas. Therefore, I first googled the Dallas Texas Independent School Districts and came across the list of ISDs. Later, I started going through each of the ISDs and got the phone numbers, email, and website. This big mission will not be possible without like-minded partners, hence I collaborated with Sri Madur and my other peers. After getting the contact information, when my team member Sri Madur and I approached each district, we kept getting the same response: “How will we be able to prevent stealing the period products, “How will each dispenser fit into our bathrooms,” How will the Maintenance take place”? With all of these questions from each district, we were first extremely heartbroken at how we couldn’t provide these products to each school to end period poverty. However, as time passed at the end of the day, we said, this shouldn’t be taken as a failure to how the school districts are not hearing our voices but rather a goal to end period poverty once and for all.

I feel privileged as I don’t have to face these challenges in life, but I truly empathize with the kids in Texas that deserve these basic needs and want to be an ambassador in solving these problems. I am always available for any kid that needs this basic product.

I commit myself completely and will always support this initiative every single day! If you have questions, comments, or concerns please kindly contact me with the below information!
